HiQ Technical expert says

The compound and pattern used on cold weather tyres is very different to that found on summer. Rubber on snow does not grip so well as snow on snow. Manufacturers use little blade like cuts in the tread known as sipes to help the tyre bite the snow so it grips better. These cuts can mean the blocks flex more so going into corners a tyre may squirm more. Goodyear's 3D bis helps get round this as the sipes when in contact with the road lock together giving better handling and more direct feel. The Ultra Grip 8 is the first to use the 3D bis across the entire pattern.

I will never drive a winter again without winter tyres. When the roads were covered in snow and ice, the car handled like a nice sunny day. I did not experience any wheel spin, steering problems or braking problems using these tyres. So come october this year I will make sure I have my ultragrip 8 fitted on the car.
