1, 2, 3 Tyre Safety
Make Sure your Tyres are in Excellent Condition for the School Run.
There could be up to 3.5 million British motorists risking thousands of pounds worth of fines, points on their licence and their own safety, according to shocking research revealed by the HiQ fast fit network. And as the roads again become busier as children go back to school, now's the time to make sure your tyres are legal and safe.
We conducted a tyre audit across our network and can reveal that more than one in ten drivers in our research were making journeys on illegal or dangerously worn tyres. This shows how easy it is to forget or overlook something so important to your safety on the road.
That's why we're launching our no-nonsense 1, 2, 3 Tyre Safety Campaign, aiming to prompt a rallying wake up call to British motorists.
1, 2, 3 good reasons to keep your tyres legal
Our 1, 2, 3 Tyre Safety Campaign highlights three very good reasons for making sure your tyres are road legal:
- One illegally worn or defective tyre could cost you £2,500
- Worn tyres can add two car lengths to your stopping distance from 50mph in wet conditions
- Each tyre with less than 1.6mm tread depth could result in three points on your licence
Shocking tyre safety results
Driving celebrities and road safety chiefs are all backing the HiQ 1, 2, 3 Tyre Safety Campaign, which coincides with free tyre safety checks at all of our 150 centres.
Retail Manager Farrell Dolan explained, 'We wanted to generate some hard hitting messages that motorists would sit up and take notice of. To say we were shocked by our audit results is an understatement. We were staggered that so many motorists are sitting on an automotive time bomb.
Some vehicles we checked had three or even four defective tyres, which could amount to 12 penalty points, disqualification and up to £10,000 in fines. It really is that serious.'

Many of us go to great lengths to keep our children and other people's children safe. At a time when they are getting back to school, make sure you're not risking your safety and their safety with dangerously worn tyres.
*Tests carried out by the Motor Industry Research Association (MIRA) involving four different vehicles travelling on wet roads on four different tread depths. At 50mph on 3mm tread depth stopping distance = 31.8 metres. On 1.6mm tread depth stopping distance was increased to 39.5 metres. The penalties for having illegal tyres are currently a fine of up to £2,500 and 3 penalty points per tyre. This relates to the law as defined in Regulation 27 of the Road Vehicle (Construction and Use) Regulations 1986.
