Recent winters have been some of the worst on record turning roads into car parks and creating havoc for drivers. But, while you can’t predict the weather, you can prepare for it by following our winter survival guide. Winter maintenance is always a hindsight thought for all motorists stranded in a snow covered hard shoulder on Christmas Eve. Whether it’s thick snow or the hidden dangers of black ice many of us know the importance of keeping your tyres and brakes in good condition during the winter months. However, many of us forget that simple car checks such as checking your cars fluids, batteries and windscreen wipers to name a few can be the difference between having your car on the road for work or stuck on your driveway.
You can get all of your maintenance checks professionally done at your local HiQ Centre so here are a few checks you made need to keep a look out for:
Battery: Make sure you check your battery is in good working order by taking your car to your local garage and keep a handy set of jump leads in the boot of your car just in case you need them during the big freeze.
Tyres: As your only connection with the road, it is essential that you have your tyres professionally checked for alignment, depth, condition and pressure. Its also recommended by HiQ that when the temperatures hit 7c or below that you fit winter tyres to your car for improved performance.
Fluids: Have you noticed any leaks on the drive way? Make sure you check for leaks and top up your levels of engine oil, windscreen wash and coolant. We’d also highly recommend you keep some spares in the car just in case.
Windscreens and wipers: Any chips or cracks in your windscreen could get worse with freezing. Always make sure your screen is clean inside and out. Also check the condition of your wipers and look for rubber deterioration.
Door locks: Freezing weather can often freeze car door locks so make sure your locks are in good condition and spray with WD40 to keep them in working order.
By doing these simple little checks and giving your car the once over by your local HiQ garage means that you can rest easy with your winter driving.
