Tyre pressures

For answers to all your motoring issues, please select from our list of topics below. What ever your question you will find your answer here.

How can the correct tyre pressure be found?

All pressures for tyres are advised by the vehicle manufacturer rather than the tyre manufacturer. Many car designers will come up with totally different pressures to suit their vehicles and their desired handling characteristic. There will have been a great deal of testing to come up to these conclusions. The pressures in tyres act as part of the vehicles suspension design therefore contributing to handling, stability, ride etc. Contrary to popular belief pressures are not only advised based on the weight of the vehicle. You should find advised pressures for your tyres in your owner's handbook or your local dealer will have the detail. Dunlop also shows a collation of vehicle manufacturers pressures on www.dunloptyres.co.uk/ourTyres/car/.

How much should the pressure in rear tyres be increased when towing a caravan?

The correct inflation pressure for car tyres will be found in the car handbook. In the absence of special towing information the rear tyres should be set at the "fully laden" tyre pressure. Where there is no full load pressure shown the rear tyre pressure should be increased by 4 to 7psi.
