Electric Vehicle MOT
Trained EV technicians with specialist expertiseEV MOT
Electric cars still need an MOT once they reach the required age, even though there is no petrol or diesel engine to test. An EV MOT focuses on the same core road safety standards as other vehicles, including brakes, tyres, steering, suspension, lights, seat belts and the condition of the vehicle structure.
At HiQ, we make it easy to arrange your electric vehicle MOT. Enter your registration and postcode to find a suitable local centre, choose your appointment and let our qualified MOT testers take care of the checks needed to keep your EV legally roadworthy.
Do electric vehicles need an MOT?
Yes. In Great Britain, most electric cars need their first MOT when they are three years old and then need a valid MOT every year. The requirement is based on the vehicle’s age and class rather than whether it is electric, petrol or diesel.
The main difference is that a fully electric vehicle has no tailpipe emissions test. The rest of the MOT still matters: an EV must meet the required safety and roadworthiness standards just like any other car.
What is checked during an electric vehicle MOT
An electric vehicle MOT typically covers areas including:
- Brakes and braking performance
- Tyres, wheels and tread depth
- Steering and suspension
- Lights, reflectors and electrical equipment
- Seat belts and other restraint systems
- Windscreen, mirrors, wipers and visibility
- Registration plates and vehicle identification
- Body and vehicle structure
- Doors, seats and other safety-related items
- Visible high voltage components and wiring, where relevant to the inspection and safe to assess
Because an EV does not have a conventional combustion engine or exhaust emissions, those parts of the test do not apply in the same way. MOT testers follow specific DVSA guidance for working safely around electric and high-voltage systems.
Common EV MOT focuses
Electric cars have fewer engine-related maintenance items, but that does not make them maintenance-free. Several MOT-sensitive components still wear through normal driving.
Tyres
EVs can be relatively heavy and deliver instant torque, so tyre condition, tread and pressure remain important.
Brakes
Regenerative braking can reduce use of the friction brakes, but discs, pads and braking performance still need to be safe and effective.
Suspension
The additional weight of an EV battery means suspension components still work hard over time.
Lights and visibility
Bulbs or lighting units, wipers, washers, windscreens and mirrors are frequent, straightforward areas to check before the test.
Warning lights
Safety-related warning lamps can affect the MOT result, so do not ignore dashboard alerts before your appointment.
How long does an EV MOT take?
An EV MOT will usually take around 45 to 60 minutes to complete. The appointment may take longer if the vehicle needs further investigation or repair work after the test. Your chosen HiQ centre can confirm the practical drop-off and collection arrangements when your booking is made.
EV MOTs for electric vans
Electric vans need the correct MOT for their vehicle class and weight. Most light goods vehicles follow the same three-year first MOT rule, but there is an important rule for heavier zero-emission vans in Great Britain.
From 1 June 2026, zero-emission goods vehicles with a design gross weight between 3,501kg and 4,250kg are treated as Class 7 vehicles for MOT purposes. Their first Class 7 MOT is due three years after registration. If you are unsure which test your electric van needs, check the vehicle weight and speak to the HiQ centre before booking.

EV MOT Frequently Asked Questions
Yes. Most fully electric cars in Great Britain need their first MOT at three years old and an MOT every year after that, unless a specific exemption applies.
The core safety and roadworthiness checks are largely the same. A fully electric car does not require a tailpipe emissions test, while testers also follow safety guidance around high-voltage electrical components.
Allow around 45 to 60 minutes for the MOT itself. Additional repairs or further work can make the overall visit longer.
The government sets a maximum MOT fee by vehicle class. HiQ prices can vary by centre and booking type, so enter your registration and postcode to see the options available locally.
An MOT must be carried out at an authorised MOT test station for the relevant vehicle class. Electric and hybrid vehicles also require testers to understand the correct safe working procedures around their electrical systems. Use HiQ’s booking tool to find a suitable centre
For most light vans, MOT requirements depend on vehicle class and weight. From 1 June 2026 in Great Britain, zero-emission goods vehicles with a design gross weight between 3,501 kg and 4,250 kg are Class 7 vehicles and need their first Class 7 MOT three years after registration.
An MOT is a roadworthiness test, not a full battery health or capacity assessment. Relevant visible components and safety items are inspected where required, but the test does not tell you how much usable battery capacity remains.
Where the relevant services are available at your chosen HiQ centre, combining an MOT with servicing can make routine maintenance easier to organise. Enter your vehicle details or speak to the centre to confirm the options for your EV.
