Hybrid Vehicle MOT

Hybrid Car MOT

Hybrid cars need the same annual MOT once they reach the required age as other cars on UK roads. Whether you drive a self-charging hybrid, mild hybrid or plug-in hybrid, the MOT checks that the vehicle meets the required safety and roadworthiness standards.

HiQ makes booking your hybrid MOT straightforward. Enter your registration and postcode to find a suitable local HiQ MOT centre and arrange your test with a qualified MOT tester.

BOOK YOUR HYBRID MOT

Do hybrid cars need an MOT?

Yes. In Great Britain, most hybrid cars need their first MOT when they are three years old and then need to be tested every year. That applies whether the car is a mild hybrid, full/self-charging hybrid or plugin hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV).

A hybrid MOT still checks the vehicle’s roadworthiness, including tyres, brakes, steering, suspension, lights and safety systems. The tester also works around both conventional engine components and the vehicle’s electric/high voltage system using the appropriate safety procedures.

What is checked during a hybrid MOT?

Your hybrid car MOT covers the main safety and roadworthiness areas required by the DVSA, including:

  • Brakes and braking performance
  • Tyres, wheels and tread depth
  • Steering and suspension
  • Lights, reflectors and electrical equipment
  • Seat belts and restraint systems
  • Windscreen, mirrors, wipers and visibility
  • Registration plates and vehicle identification
  • Body and vehicle structure
  • Exhaust system and visible emissions control equipment where applicable
  • Relevant warning lamps and vehicle safety systems

Hybrid vehicles are treated differently from conventional petrol and diesel cars for the measured exhaust emissions part of the MOT. Current DVSA testing guidance does not require the standard gaseous emissions or diesel opacity test for hybrids, including mild hybrids, although relevant emissions control equipment, exhaust condition and required warning lamps can still be inspected.

Why choose a hybrid MOT centre?

A hybrid combines an internal combustion engine with an electric drive system. While an MOT does not involve dismantling or servicing the high voltage system, testers need to recognise hybrid components and follow the correct procedures for safely starting, moving and immobilising the vehicle during the inspection.

Booking through HiQ helps you find an authorised MOT centre for your vehicle, with access to additional tyres, servicing and repair support if your hybrid needs attention.

Common hybrid MOT focuses

Tyres

Check tread depth, damage and pressures before the test.

Brakes

Regenerative braking does not remove the need for safe friction brakes, discs and pads.

Suspension

Hybrid batteries add weight, so worn suspension components can still become an MOT issue.

Lights, wipers and visibility

Simple faults can lead to an avoidable failure.

Exhaust and engine-related items

Hybrids still contain combustion engine and exhaust components that must be secure and in suitable condition.

Dashboard warning lights

Required safety or engine management warning lamps can affect the result.

How long does a hybrid MOT take?

A hybrid MOT will normally take around 45 to 60 minutes. If the test identifies a fault that needs repair, your vehicle may need to stay at the centre longer. Your HiQ centre can advise on drop-off, collection and any additional work before repairs are carried out.

EV MOT Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. Most hybrid cars need their first MOT at three years old and must then pass an MOT every 12 months to remain legally roadworthy, unless a specific exemption applies.

Yes. Plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) follow the MOT requirement for their vehicle class and age in the same way as other hybrid cars.

Yes. “Self-charging” describes how the hybrid system replenishes its battery; it does not exempt the car from the legal MOT requirement.

An MOT is not a hybrid battery health or capacity test. It checks prescribed roadworthiness and safety items. Battery condition or remaining capacity requires a separate diagnostic or manufacturer-specific assessment.

Allow around 45 to 60 minutes for the MOT itself. Repair work following a failure or advisory can extend the overall visit.

Where available at your chosen HiQ centre, you can arrange servicing alongside your MOT for added convenience. Hybrid servicing has additional maintenance considerations, so check the options for your make and model when booking.

The core road safety checks are the same, but testers also need to work safely around the hybrid system. Current DVSA guidance exempts hybrids, including mild hybrids, from the standard measured gaseous emissions and diesel smoke opacity tests.

Under current DVSA guidance, hybrids, including mild hybrids, are not subject to the standard measured gaseous emissions or diesel opacity test. However, relevant exhaust components, emissions control equipment and warning lamps may still form part of the inspection.
