Daniel Welch’s Oulton Park heroics have earned him a HiQ champagne moment award for the first time, it was revealed.

The Hampshire racer recorded a series of memorable results, the highlight being a fourth place finish in race two, to the delight of thousands of spectators.

He ended the event as the fourth highest independent points scorer to earn 12 bonus race tyres from Dunlop as part of its support for privateer drivers.

Daniel polled 38 per cent of the votes, with last season’s Oulton Park champagne moment winner Lea Wood coming second with 21 per cent.

Matt Neal’s quest for his first champagne moment goes on, as the two time Oulton race winner polled 15 per cent of votes.

Winning fan Gary Watson was picked at random to present the bottle of champagne to Daniel, and he now wins a pair of weekend passes to Croft, along with a bottle of bubbly for himself to keep and a grid walk.

He said: “I am thrilled to win. Daniel won my vote because he was so impressive in all the races.

“His fourth place finish was the stand out moment, but I couldn’t forget his qualifying performance to line up in eighth, and which he followed up with sixth place in the first race.”

HiQ’s marketing manager Geraldine McGovern said: “Daniel’s triumph is the reason we set-up these champagne moments back in 2008.

“The winner isn’t always the man on the podium, but one who has impressed in other ways. Daniel Welch in his Welch Motorsport team is a fully deserving winner and we are absolutely thrilled for him.”
