HiQ SUPPORTS TYRE SAFETY MONTH

Wednesday, 6th May 2020

HiQ is proud to be a supporter of TyreSafe; the industry body that campaigns to educate drivers about the importance of tyre safety. On average, 1000 casualties are caused on Britain’s roads as a result of tyre-related incidents; nearly 200 of those are tragically killed or seriously injured*.

October is Tyre Safety Month and this year TyreSafe is partnering with police forces all across the UK to do random vehicle stops to encourage a week of national action. Drivers should “Tune into Tyre Safety” with their campaign that has merged something that everyone loves: music, with a topic that many drivers don't know a lot about: tyre safety

The campaign encourages drivers to check their tyres at least once a month, every month AND before long journeys. Here are three key things that drivers should look out for:

  • Under pressure: Use an accurate tyre pressure gauge to check tyres’ air pressure is at the recommended settings. Check the vehicles owner’s handbook or fuel filler cap
  • Get Into The Groove: Tread depth should be checked with an accurate gauge to ensure it is above the minimum legal limit of 1.6mm. A 20p can be used as a guide to how close your tread is to the limit if you don’t have a tread depth gauge available
  • Every Check You Take: Lumps or bulges in a tyre may indicate internal damage and increase the risk of a catastrophic failure. If these, or cuts and cracks, are found while checking a tyre, the tyre may need replacing and professional advice should be sought.

Did you know that over 27% of tyres are already illegal when they are replaced? A lot of the problems with tyres are caused because cars are fitted with part worn tyres!

We understand that part worn tyres cost less and take less time to source and fit compared to new tyres.

However, tyres are the only part of the car that are in constant physical contact with the road and ensure your safety whilst driving. Fitting your cars with part worn tyres is not worth the risk.

Message for the month: Ensure you and your family are safe in the car by fitting your car with new tyres and checking your tyres once a month, every month (and before long journeys)!
